Ultramarathoner Adam Kimble is always searching for the next running challenge to tackle to find out what his body is capable of and attempt make the possible out of the impossible.
Adam Kimble with Fleet Feet Sports Chicago CEO Dave Zimmer
His next challenge, commencing on February 15th in Huntington Beach, California and ending in New York City, might be his greatest yet.To break the Guinness World Record for the fastest crossing of the United States by foot by a male, a record of 46 days, 8 hours and 36 minutes that has defiantly stood the test of time for close to 36 years.
Fleet Feet Sports Chicago will be sponsoring Adam during his world-record breaking attempt, providing him with 10 pairs of size 14 Asics Gel Nimbus 17 running shoes – along with running singlets and long sleeve tops for when he is on the road and runCHI apparel to wear when he isn’t hitting the pavement.
I love ultrarunning. I also love sweet potatoes. Well, thanks to organic energy food from @clifbarcompany, I can enjoy them together! An unknown dream come true. His attempt at this supreme test of endurance will help to raise funds and awareness for a non-profit organization that encourages young people to reach beyond their limits and use adventure as a medium to educate, inspire, and empower.
Kimble, 29, grew up in southwest suburban Minooka and came into running after playing Division 1 baseball at Bradley University in Peoria. His first 5K in the summer of 2009 was like many runners first race – cramps and pains – but Kimble placed second in his age group and from there blossomed a desire to see how far he could push his body. A half marathon lead to the Chicago Marathon in 2012 and that lead to ultra marathons – including a first place finish in the 2015 Gobi March 250K (155 mile) in China – part of the prestigious 4 Deserts Race series – in a time of 25:39:33.
The idea of making the crossing of the United States on foot started with a dream of doing something even a little more daunting. While on vacation in Chile with his wife, Karen, Adam toyed with the idea of running the length of the 19,000 mile Pan American Highway from the southern tip of Chile to Prudhomme Bay in Alaska. The logistics of crossing so many international borders made the proposition problematic, but gave rise to the idea of tackling the record of crossing America.
Guinness World Records has guidelines for such an attempt with the exact route, “the shortest/most suitable route between the two cities” up to the discretion of the runner, but with the stipulation that the distance is “equal to or greater than the distance between New York and Los Angeles (2,766 miles).
The route Adam has mapped out will total 3,030 miles, starting in California and heading east through the Southwest states of Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. Adam is starting the route farther south to take advantage of the milder seasonal temperatures of this area rather than the colder temperatures and uncertain winter weather conditions further north. The route traverses Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama before turning northward into Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. The final stages of his cross-country sojourn will take him through Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey before the finish in New York City.
Adam's 3,030 Mile Course Map
The plan for Adam will be to average between 65-70 miles a day, what would roughly amount to three marathons a day, though he intends to run less mileage at the start of the attempt and increase his mileage into the second and third weeks of the trek as his body acclimates to the mileage load. His strategy for staying fueled up during his time on the road will include “a big breakfast” and “eating constantly” to insure he consumes the 6000 calories his body will need as Adam estimates he will burn 240 calories an hour while he is running each day.
When Adam is not running he will be resting in one of the RVs that will carry his support crew, including his wife Karen, who will provide support and record his journey across America, though Adam does expect to “occasionally” experience the comforts of a hotel along the route.

Adam is using his attempt to break the Guinness World Record to raise money and awareness for Impossible2Possible, a non-profit organization that uses adventure to inspire and empower youth all over the world. That message of inspiration resonated with Adam, “I love what their mission is, to inspire people to reach their impossible.”
News outlets have since picked up on his daring feat and have encouraged others to tune in and keep updated with Adam's journey.
We will be following Adam’s journey on a map of the United States in our Lincoln Square location and posting updates of his progress on our website and social media accounts. You can also follow Adam on Twitter @thebeardedsoul. So check back starting February 15th and follow Adam as he makes his way across America in his quest for history.

Day 1
2/15/16
10:30AM: A quiet start to a wild adventure, Adam beings his journey at Huntington Beach, CA. Photo by @paulshawbailey and @charliejkaye. Donate to their indie go go campaign: http://igg.me/at/
2:30PM: Adam stops and poses with fellow fans and runners in Yorba Linda, CA, approximately 15-20 miles in.
9:00PM: "Adam began Day 1 from the Huntington Beach pier. He ran a total of 55.6 miles today in just over 13 hours. Temps were warmer than planned, reaching 88 degrees midday, so our crew was focused on hydration and sodium levels. His spirits are high and he's looking forward to tomorrow!" - Karen Kimble(Adam's wife)
Day 2
2/16/16
8:00AM: "Adam just cleared pit stop 1 on day 2. He's experiencing pain behind his knee but still moving forward. Here's a glimpse of what a typical pit stop looks like for Adam and crew." - KK
2:00PM: "Still moving. Still crewing. Taking it one mile, one step, one inch at a time. You just can't beat the stunning views and you can't beat the great crew! #wifeagerpost" Photo cred: @paulshawbailey
9:00PM: "The sun sets on day 2! It wasn't always pretty, but we made it through as a team and will only be stronger tomorrow. Setting our eyes on the horizon and keeping our mind on the goal! Ready for day 3!" - KK
11:00PM: "Adam begin Day 2 from Riverside, CA and ran a total of 45 miles. Well, technically he only ran 10 of those miles and walked the other 35 due to some intense pain behind his knee. He battled some physical and mental demons on the course today, but was able to get his focus back on the goal and finished the day by running the final 7 miles and still has a smile on his face! We are happy to have day 2 behind us and look forward to the new day ahead! Assuming he feels well tomorrow, we will adjust the next few days' mileage and right back on track." - KK

Day 3
2/17/16
10:00AM: "Stretching it out and soaking in the early morning sun! We're at mile 18 on the day, knee is feeling better (pain level of 4, 0 being pain free), and spirit is flying high. He's been knocking out Serial podcasts and is determined to push on!" -KK
3:00PM: "30 miles in and still smiling. 😄 Enjoying these moments, knowing we have many long miles ahead. Each day, each hour, each mile can bring about new challenges and opportunities to grow as individuals and as a team!" -KK
11:00PM: "Still at it with 10 miles left for the night. The good news? The knee feels better. The not so good? Now it's his achilles. We are fighting for every mile right now, but each step forward is a step towards the goal. Photo cred:@charliejkaye" - KK
Recap: "Adam begin Day 3 from Cabazon, CA and covered a total of 56 miles on foot. His recovery routine on night 2, which included an ice bath, one hour using his Norma-Tec Recovery system, and application of his Kool 'N Fit liquid pain relief spray, helped to ease the pain behind his knee. He started day 3 with high spirits and minimal pain. The course was relatively flat, with some rolling hills through wind farms near North Palm Springs. Unfortunately Adam started experiencing tendon pain behind his ankle late in the day, which forced him to walk his final 18 miles. We know that his body is confused and trying anything it can to get him to stop, but he is determined to press on! The entire team is trying to be patient through the pain and be ready to adjust the strategy at any given point. It's amazing to see just how many highs and lows can be experienced in 18-hours time out on these dusty, sandy trails across the southwest! Tomorrow is a new day and a fresh chance to work smarter and stronger as a team!" -KK
Day 4
2/18/16
9:00AM: "Breakfast with a view! We are taking it slow and steady on day 4, knocking off these miles the only way you can: one step at a time." - KK

Recap: "Finished up early today after 36 miles. Adam walked the first 30 (his body hasn't taken the hint yet...there's no stopping him) but he was able to run again by day's end! We decided as a team that it's better to increase rest and recovery tonight and not push for miles, since we still have time on our side. Gearing up for day 5 and looking forward to our last full day in California! #AZbound #wifeagerpost" - KK
Day 5
2/19/16
9:00AM: "Up and moving on day 5! We are trying to keep a consistent morning routine, knowing that Adam's body will soon get the hang of this new routine. The routine is as follows: verryy slowly sit up out of bed around 3am, he weighs himself, eats a@canyonglutenfree bagel loaded with honey, cinnamon and @trailbutter, takes his pulse and hemoglobin levels using his @cercacor ember device, wakes up his muscles using self-activation and stretching, hydrates, throws on his@noxgear_nation tracer 360 and headlamp, and hits the road by 4!" - KK
2:00PM:
"Reposting this great shot by crew member @clayton_dorge of Adam in the early hours of day 5! Clayton has been biking and running with Adam each day from 4am until sunrise to make sure he doesn't go off route! It takes a village...😎" - KK

4:00PM: Meet Kyle McCoy. Adam and Kyle met each other last May running the @4deserts Gobi March. They traversed sand dunes together, shared water when temps reached over 100 degrees, and survived a sandstorm. Fast forward to today when Kyle surprised Adam by flying to Phoenix and driving west to run with Adam. He's been with Adam since mile 5 and is committed to helping Adam keep moving, even though his pain levels are high today. At this point, miles are miles no matter what they look like. As long as Adam is moving, we have a shot at this GWR.
Recap: "Day 6 began just after 4:00 am. It was difficult for the entire crew to watch Adam hobble away and begin ticking off the steps for the day. The first 5 miles were extremely slow going since Adam was in agony from the pain in his legs. Before Adam even arrived at the first pit stop, the crew was already researching how to find a doctor to check him out. In these parts of California and Arizona, we couldn’t find an open doctor’s office on the weekends. Thankfully, just after Adam got to the first pit stop, ultra pal, Kyle McCoy pulled up on the side of the road to meet us. Kyle had spontaneously booked a ticket from Seattle, WA to Phoenix, AZ and drove west 150 miles to walk with Adam and encourage him through the pain. The two began walking together as the sun rose, ran across the Colorado River into Arizona together and ended the day in the dark Arizona desert.

Recap: "Today was another day in the desert. Except, thankfully, we found a route on pavement instead of soft sand trails. Crew mates Clayton and Josh both walked with Adam for several miles in the morning and Karen, Adam’s wife, joined in this evening. In the afternoon, we focused on reducing the tension and pain in Adam’s body by taking the time to stretch and pound out his muscles and pain points to loosen up a bit. This first week has not gone to plan with the number of miles we anticipated accomplishing by this point, but we have realized Adam’s body is still adjusting to the new routine. We still have a lot of time ahead of us and Adam is pushing through the pain like a boss. 30 more miles in the books today! Each step is one closer to the East Coast. Bring on Day 8!" - Lindsey(crew member)

Recap: "Day 8 was a plug and chug, rinse and repeat day. Adam went through eight cycles of walking five miles then having a pit stop where he would rest, get hydrated, have a snack, stretch, get some hang time with the team and then begin the next five mile segment. Spirits were high as the team continues to get closer with jokes cracking, spontaneous dance parties and 90's music rocking each pit stop. Adam's mood was light, yet very determined to keep going and knock out the next five miles throughout the day even with continued pain. The desert was a bit more kind with constant wind, but still provided no relief from the sun. The team is proud of Adam for accomplishing 39 miles today. On to resting for the night."- Lindsey(crew member)
Day 12
12:30PM:
4:00PM:
Recap: "Three days of rest were exactly what Adam needed. He started the day off strong walking from 4 am to 8:45 am and completing 15 miles at a 15 minute mile pace. This was a huge improvement from his average 20 minute mile pace four days ago. Adam has been setting small goals for himself to have tiny victories throughout the day. His overall goal for the day was 40 miles with his pain at or below a five. These were both accomplished around 4 pm today with his pain level at a four. Woo hoo! The team noticed a huge difference in Adam’s mental game, too. Instead of relaxing during pit stops, he was intentional with his time and was determined to start the next five mile section strong. Thankful for a great day back at it!"-Lindsey(crew member)

Recap: "Exciting moment for Adam! He started running again today! Today started a new routine of intervals of running and walking. His initial plan was to do this all along, but since he’s been in a lot of pain he hasn’t run since the afternoon of Day 5. So running is huge deal! Even though he’s running, he’s still in pain in his left shin, left IT band and left ackilles. Adam is waiting for the day he can enjoy running again and not be in pain. Right now, he can’t remember what that feels like. As a team, we can’t wait for that day to come, too! On another team front, videographer Paul successfully snapped the handlebars right off the fork of his bike and completed the trick with a crazy flip when climbing a pass in Arizona's Superstitious Mountains. He was okay, but was in shock. The day ended on a sweet note, Adam and Karen’s family surprised the team with an amazing meal of fresh salads, guacamole, smoothies, and creme puffs! Delish! Forty five miles were dominated today making the overall total 489 miles. This means Adam will be hitting mile 500 tomorrow. The team has a surprise to celebrate the big accomplishment tomorrow! Stay tuned!" - Lindsey(crew member)

9:00PM:
Recap: "Today was the same routine: Wake up at 3 am. Start walking at 4 am. Run/Walk 5 miles. Pit Stop. Run/Walk 5 miles. Pit stop. Over and over until the finish line for the day. Today’s finish line was an exciting one! Adam hit the New Mexico border after completing 47 miles for the day! Ultra pal ran with Adam the last 30 miles of the day and finished at the New Mexico border with Adam. To shake things up a bit at the pit stops, Adam’s wife Karen started playing Pass the Popcorn to give Adam fun trivia since he’s a big movie guy. We have also been Periscoping pit stops so folks can see what a normal day in the life of running across the USA is like for Adam. Check out Adam’s periscope account at @thebeardedsole. Excited for new miles in New Mexico tomorrow! 633 miles down, another 2,389 to go." -Lindsey(crew member)

Day 43
Recap: Today was a slower day than normal, but Adam still progressed by getting in 29 miles from 5 am to 8:30 pm. He was experiencing a lot of pain in his right shin and right hip. He’s amazing to persevere through all of the pain. Progress is progress! One of the best parts of the day was having two puppies follow Adam for 3 miles and keep him company. The crew would have loved to keep the pups as our trans-con mascots, but we reunited the puppies with their family. Onto Day 44 in Louisiana!
